Our bright and galvanized double loop bale ties are of the highest quality thanks to a manufacturing life cycle that leaves nothing to chance. The galvanizing and annealing processes are expertly conducted and adhere to rigorous protocols to ensure perfection every time.

The galvanizing process

The galvanizing process protects steel wire from corrosion by applying a zinc coating that acts as a barrier between the metal and the external environment.

Our hot-dip galvanizing process works as follows:

  1. Surface preparation: first, the wire is cleaned to remove any impurities from the surface of the metal. This is important for ensuring proper adhesion of the zinc coating.
  2. Pickling: the wire is then immersed in an acid solution to remove any remaining oxides and scale. This process prepares the surface for galvanizing by creating a clean substrate.
  3. Fluxing: the wire is then immersed in a flux solution (zinc ammonium chloride), which helps to prevent oxidation and promotes a uniform application of the zinc coating.
  4. Galvanizing bath: next, the wire is dipped into a bath of molten zinc at a temperature of around 450°C (850°F).
  5. Alloy formation: while immersed in the molten zinc, a metallurgical reaction occurs between the iron in the wire and the zinc, resulting in the formation of a series of zinc-iron alloy layers. These provide excellent adhesion properties and corrosion resistance.
  6. Withdrawal: the wire is then slowly withdrawn from the zinc bath. The rate at which the withdrawal takes place is controlled to allow excess zinc to drain off and ensure the final product has an even coating.
  7. Quenching: the coated wire is then quenched in water or a quenching solution to cool it rapidly. This process solidifies the zinc coating and completes the galvanizing process.

The galvanizing process ensures maximum protection by creating an extra durable and corrosion-resistant coating that can last up to 30 years, depending on the galvanization class.

After the wire is galvanized, we apply a coat of wax to the finished product. This creates a clean surface finish and also provides additional protection. The surface finish ensures that the wire never leaves a mess of scrap metal and always feeds smoothly in automatic baling machines.

Galvanization classes explained

Our galvanized wire–both regular and hi-tensile varieties– is offered with Class 1 or Class 3 galvanizing coatings. These coatings offer different levels of durability and protection, which contribute to the overall longevity of the wire. 

While Class 1 is the more economical choice, Class 3 galvanization provides enhanced protection thanks to a thicker coating of zinc:

  • Class 1 galvanization is the most basic type of galvanized coating, typically used for fencing, caging, and enclosure purposes. Wire is galvanized by adding a thin layer of zinc, making it the more cost-efficient option, but sacrificing longevity. Class 1 galvanized wire fences start to rust quickly, typically lasting a maximum of 11 years, and as little as 2 years. In a coastal area with heavy concentrations of salt water in the air, it deteriorates even more quickly.
  • Class 3 galvanization provides a stronger, longer-lasting zinc coating. Whereas Class 1 wire coating uses 0.28 ounces of zinc per square foot, Class 3 coated wire has a zinc coating that is nearly three times thicker (approximately 0.80 ounces per square foot). It costs slightly more than Class 1 but will last anywhere from 13 to 30 years before it rusts, making it well worth the investment.

What are bright finished bale ties?

Bright-finished bale ties are a class of wire ties that have a polished, shiny surface. Bright bale ties are used for the following reasons:

  • Reduced friction during the baling process for efficient equipment operation. It can also increase the longevity of baling machinery.
  • Bright bale ties offer a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing appearance compared to other finishes. This can be advantageous for retail applications and use in consumer-facing environments.
  • The lack of a specialized coating or finish can make bright bale ties a more cost-effective option.
  • Bales that are stored primarily indoors may not need the environmental resistance properties that galvanized or annealed wire ties provide.
  • Some baling equipment may be designed to operate best with bright bale ties.
