About the ABS plastic recycling industry

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is a common type of plastic used in consumer products, automotive parts, and other applications.

Baling Wire Direct is a key partner to the ABS plastic recycling industry. We provide high-quality baling wire that is integral to the recycling process. We manufacture 100% USA-made wire, ensuring that recycling operations can run smoothly and effectively.

Our products play a crucial role in the recycling process. Baling wire is used to securely transport large quantities of ABS plastics to recycling facilities. The high quality of our products ensures minimal waste due to breakage, improving safety, reducing costs, and minimizing material use.

But our partnership with the recycling industry doesn’t stop at the use of our products. We also promote the recycling of used baling wire. By recycling used baling wire, recycling companies can double down on their environmental commitment, reduce the use of precious resources, and reduce carbon emissions.

Our commitment to environmental sustainability, advocacy for the recycling of baling wire, and provision of high-quality products make us a valuable partner to the ABS plastic recycling industry.

What is ABS plastic?

ABS is a common plastic known for its high tensile strength, impact resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance. It's created through an emulsification process combining acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. ABS is easy to mold, sand, and shape, and it's compatible with many paints and glues.

It's widely used in injection molding and 3D printing, and found in products such as computer keyboard keys, LEGO bricks, and automotive components. ABS is cost-effective and easy to machine, but when melted, it can release potentially harmful fumes. It's non-toxic in solid form and is 100% recyclable.

The future of the ABS recycling market

The ABS recycling market is projected to grow significantly in the coming years. This growth is driven by increased consumer demand, technological advancements, and strategic actions by key market players.

The Asia-Pacific region is expected to experience the fastest growth, with a compound annual growth rate of around 6.4% from 2021–26. However, polymer contamination continues to challenge recycling efforts by affecting the quality of the recycled material. Other issues include inconsistent stock availability and technological limitations. Despite these challenges, the overall outlook for the ABS recycling market remains positive.

The ABS plastic baling process

The process of baling ABS plastic involves several steps:

  • Collection and sorting. The first step in the process is the collection of ABS plastic material. The collected material is then sorted to separate out any other waste.
  • Shredding. Once the ABS plastic has been sorted and cleaned, it is shredded into small pieces. This is done to reduce the size of the material and make it easier to handle.
  • Baling. The shredded ABS plastic is then fed into a baler. In the case of ABS plastic, horizontal auto-tie balers are often used. These balers have full ejection and separation of individual bales during the baling process. The baler then forces the plastic into a dense, rectangular cube. The bales are then tied into shape with baling wire.
  • Post-baling processing. After baling, ABS plastics can be further processed to create new products.

The benefits of ABS recycling

  • The recycling process reduces the need for virgin plastic production.
  • The energy required to recycle ABS is significantly lower than that needed to produce new ABS.
  • Through recycling, large quantities of plastic that would otherwise end up in landfills or as environmental pollutants are recaptured.
  • The recycling of ABS can create job opportunities and support local economies.
  • Recycled ABS is cheaper than raw ABS.

The challenges of ABS recycling

  • Sometimes the quality of recycled ABS is degraded, making it unsuitable for certain applications.
  • ABS recycling requires effective sorting and separation, which can be challenging and energy-intensive.
  • There is a lack of information about the availability of recycled plastics, its quality, and suitability for specific applications, which stunts demand.
  • Without streamlined sourcing processes, it can be challenging to find ABS plastics to recycle in a cost-effective manner.
  • Many countries, especially developing ones, lack recycling technology and industry knowledge.

Despite these challenges, ABS recycling remains an essential process for reducing waste and conserving resources.

Types of baling wire used in ABS plastic recycling

Baling wire plays a crucial role in the ABS plastic recycling industry. It is used to tie and compress ABS plastics into bales for transportation, storage, and recycling. Various types of wire are used in ABS recycling. The type of wire used depends upon the baler, the size of the recycling operation, and the storage location for baled materials.

The following wire types are commonly used in baling ABS plastics:

  • Single loop bale ties. These are often used in vertical balers and need to be hand tied. They can be manufactured from black annealed wire and galvanized wire.
  • Double loop bale ties. These wire ties have a loop at both ends, allowing for quick and easy bundling and eliminating the need for the user to bend the wire.
  • Black annealed baling wire. This type of wire is has been heat-treated for increased ductility, and has a consistent oiled surface. It is used in single-ram balers.
  • High-tensile galvanized wire. This wire is used for the toughest baling applications and is often used in two-ram balers. Galvanization gives this wire a tough layer of weather protection.

Each type of baling wire comes in various wire gauges, lengths, and finishes, and the choice of wire depends on the type of material being baled, the size of the bales being produced, and the amount of bales produced per day.

Common types of balers used in ABS recycling

ABS plastic balers are used to make the recycling process more efficient and cost-effective. Different types of balers are commonly used in the ABS recycling industry, including vertical balers, horizontal balers, and two-ram balers.

Vertical balers are generally more affordable and take up less space than horizontal balers, making them popular for small-scale operations. Two-ram balers can handle high quantities of ABS plastic material. The additional ram packs more material into every bale to maximize baling, storage, and shipping efficiency.

Our ABS plastic baling wire sizes

We offer a wide variety of wire suitable for baling ABS plastics. Our products are compatible with all baler machinery, including vertical and horizontal balers.

Gauge is the standard for sizing baling wire. Wire gauge is inversely related to diameter, meaning that a smaller wire diameter corresponds to a higher gauge wire.

  • Our hi-tensile galvanized wirecomes in 11 and 12 gauge.
  • Our regular galvanized baling wire comes in 11, 12, 13, and 14 gauge.
  • Our black annealed baling wire comes in 9, 10, 11, and 12 gauge.
  • Our single and double loop bale ties come in 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 gauge (with half sizes available in select products)
